A Bronx Tale: Meet Joel

Posted on July 26, 2016

Joel is a talented musician, but after years of struggling with bipolar disorder, his guitar sat in the closet. “I really credit Fountain House Bronx for bringing me back to life,” he says. He began coming to the clubhouse every day and spending time with people who understood his challenges. Eventually he felt like playing music again.

A working community is at the heart of the Fountain House model. The opportunity to be a part of a community of supportive people builds dignity and self-esteem. In Joel’s case, that meant getting back on stage. The Fountain House Bronx community helped Joel put on a concert at the clubhouse, and he is now playing jazz gigs around New York City.
